Pelourinho - Salvador - Bahia - Brasil

Everybody who comes to Salvador certainly visit Pelourinho, also known as "Pelô" for its visitors and people who live there.

Pelourinho is the historical centre of Salvador city. We could say that it is the centre of Bahia or even of Brazil, so that the History of Brazil started in Bahia. The History of Bahia started in Salvador and the History of Salvador started in Pelourinho.

Pelourinho means "place to lash the slavors". During many years the slavors used to be lashed in this place. In the end of the slavery in Brazil in 1835, Pelourinho started to call attention of all sort of artists, specially regarding cinema, music and painting, what turned the place into a rich cultural centre.

Pelourinho is a place with beautiful and very colored colonial buildings. Some buildings are more beautiful outside than inside, seeing that the town hall reformed only the frontages in order to atract the tourists. On the other hand some houses are more beautiful inside what is really amazing how such nice places are hidden behind the frontages.

You can get Pelourinho through “Cidade Baixa” (down town) neighbouring, if you just take Lacerda Elevator(picture above), by bus ("Praça da Sé" line), by taxi or private car.
Getting this beautiful place, you can be delighted with “Bahia de Todos os Santos” landscape. There you can see the ocean, the “Cidade Baixa” neighbouring , the “Mercado Modelo” model market (the building which is set up down in the picture in its centre), a fascinating sunset, etc.

Through the “Baixa do Sapateiro” neighbourhood, you can also get Pelourinho, though it is not so nice like through “Praça da Sé” which offers the fantastic view of “Bahia de Todos os Santos”.

In front of “Elevador Lacerda”, you can find many Touristic Guides (the ones wearing yellow T-Shirt in the picture). They are really many and come to you to offer their services and ribbons of "Senhor do Bonfim" like a gift for some money.

has been restored outsid by the “Pestana Group”.

The picture above shows another enterprise which has been constructed.
It was attracted by the construction of “Pousada do Convento do
Carmo”.
The picture above shows the construction of the “sloping plan”
which will link the high city with the dow city. (cidade
alta and cidade baixa neighborhoods).
These constructions have been realized by the Municipal and State governments, what certainly will valorize even more the Pelourinho.
