Bahia Brazil - Jauá (Jauá beach)
Jauá belonged to the county of Vila de Abrantes and located between the km15 and the km16 of Estrada do Coco, Jauá Beach is the first with free access to the county of Camaçari. The district of Vila de Abrantes, where the Jauá Beach is located, was the first seat of this county, established in 1758 in the indigenous village of Espírito Santo, then beginning to be called Vila Nova de Abrantes do Espírito Santo.

Jauá is the name of a kind of parrot, typical from the coast oh
Bahia and it indigenous name was used to baptize the beach.

Old fishermen village, Jauá has, along just one day, two different
and equally amazing landscapes; with full tide, the sea appears corpulent,
rough and with waves. In contrast to when the tide is low and the sea
is like a big pool that is gets smaller after, showing it rocks (characteristic
of this area) and creating a natural aquarium, very good for divers and
for a relaxing swimming. Jauá is a very beautiful beach, recommended,
moreover for kids.

Jauá beach is located in Estrada do Coco (Coconut Coast), north
coast of Salvador, Bahia.
It has a long extension (in kilometers), with white sand and warm water,
is enclosure by white dunes. Reefs mold natural pools during the low tide,
in some parts of the beach that is the south is almost deserted.
The Costa dos Coqueiros (Coconut Coast) is located in the north area
of the state of Bahia and is formed by gorgeous and not crowded beaches,
totalizing 193km. Comprehend Lauro de Freitas, Imbassaí, Porto
de Sauípe, Subaúma, Sítio do Conde, Mangue Seco,
and others localities. The Estrada do Coco (Coconut Road) and it prolongation,
the Linha Verde (Green Line), BA 099, interconnect the region. It is about
conserved and privatized.
There are two ways to arrive at Jauá Beach. The first one is by the mainly access, located between the km15 and the km16 of Estrada do Coco (Coconut Road), less then 1km after the toll. It is about an urban area called Pé de Areia, name that refers to the local dunes and where, every year, a party in honor to the patron saint, Sao Miguel, happens. From this place to the beach is a 3km way with asphalt.
The alternative access is at the km12 of the Estrada do Coco, in the
Camaçari City Hall. It is about a 4km extension way, by the district
of Vila de Abrantes.
There is a regular bus and minibus service to Salvador (except at night).
There is no doubt that the 2,5km of coast, composed by four beaches from south to north (Praia do Japonês, Sororoca, Pedra da Baleia e Praia do Grilo), are the big attraction of Jauá. This beach area is perfect to those who like to appreciate a cold beer, drink coconut water, eat an appetizing acarajé (typical snack made with white beans, shrimp) or taste a delicious seafood dish. More than 50 options of beach bar can be found there, besides restaurants, lodges, supermarkets, drugstores, small squares, movie/DVD store and pretty landscapes.
The Praia do Japonês (Japanese Beach) is located at the extreme south of Jauá, closer to Busca Vida. This is a beach good for surfing, as it has no stones and big waves. The name of the beach comes from the first inhabitant, a japanese man.
The Praia de Sororoca (Sororoca Beach) is the first stretch of beach to the south. Due the absence of breakwater, it provides strong waves, being selected for surf, kite surf and other sports of the sort. Even though there is no sidewalk and the localization is a little bit far from the urban center, people use this beach a lot for joggings. It access is trough the Aquarius Street, where the alternative way to Vila de Abrantes starts.
The Praia da Baleia (Whale Beach) is a region of the coast located in the urban center, protected by reefs that during the low tide form huge natural pools with warm and calm sea. This area also is used as a port by fishermen and their small boats, what enriches the pretty view. In this beach there is a sidewalk along the sea-coast for joggings, beyond a small square for the ones who want to practice physical activities.
In the Praia do Grilo (Cricket Beach), located in the north, right after the Praia da Baleia, there is a predominance of reefs, forming natural pools and a vast coco tree plantation. By the old times it used to have a big quantity of crickets at the place, what gave the idea for the beach’s name.
Jauá is stemming from old fishing villages. Every day, in certain hours in accordance with the tide, is possible to watch the departures and arrivals of boats full of fresh fishes, that can be choose and bought right there.
The dunes of Jauá arte part of the environment protection area
of the Parque das Dunas de Abrantes (Dunes Park of Abrantes) and in there
many people practice sandboard, a sport that started in Florianópólis,
Santa Catarina. Very similar to snowboard, the sport is practiced in sand
dunes, with a board that varies from 1,20m to 1,70m of length, made wooden
or of fiber. Its maneuvers are adaptations from other sports like surf,
skate and snowboard.
On dunes of Jauá it is possible to watch the sunrise and the sunset
with a panoramic view of the whole local coast. These dunes are known
as natural recreational park where kids can play to the will.
The local culture is another strong point of the region. All along the year it is possible to watch popular manifestations, from among the Lavagem de Jauá, Iemanjá Fest, the Lavagem do Pé de Areia and the local Carnival.
The Lavagem de Jauá happens in the last week of January and this is the most festive period of the place. At this occasion, the party of the patron saint of Jauá, Bom Jesus dos Navegantes is celebrated. Beyond the procession, there is also a popular party with musicians playing in big trucks (what we call trio elétrico in Brazil), small trucks throwing water to refresh the people in the streets (carros-pipa) and the presence of celebrities from Bahia.
During the Iemanjá Party, on the 2nd of February, boats depart to the sea, bringing offerings (vases with flowers and baskets full of gifts, like combs, mirrors, perfumes) to the Queen of the Sea.
The Lavagem de Pé de Areia happens every year on the last week of September and has São Miguel as its patron saint. These lavagens have as the mainly characteristic what we call sincretismo that means different religions like Catholicism and Candomblé at the same celebration.
The Carnival of Jauá, on the contrary of the one in Salvador, is a tranquil party, known for the presence of traditional groups of carnival and also for the groups formed by men dressed like women.

Investments in infrastructure have opened new opportunities in the mainly
tourist regions, in special in Costa do Coqueiros (Coconut Coast).
The sun shinning the whole year, the beauty of the coconut palms and the
blue sea of the Costa dos Coqueiros, seem to be important attractive for
the investors from all over the country, especially of the tourist sector.
However, beside the natural beauty, the existing infrastructure and the
proximity to the International Airport of Salvador appear as decisive
elements.
The number of hotels, lodges and resorts increases every year in the
region. A subject published by the brazilian magazine Veja (REVISTA VEJA,
23 mar. 2005) reveals that, until the end of 2007, for example, there
will be nine new enterprises, totalizing around 2500 apartments ready
receive guests disposable to pay at minimum R$ 600,00 of daily income.
The Costa dos Coqueiros, that has being consolidate as the stronger international
tourist pole of Bahia, counts with solid enterprises already installed,
as the Complexo de Costa do Sauípe (Coast of Sauípe Complex)
and Praia do Forte Resort, as well as another big investments projects.
Among them is the one from the Spanish group Iberostar, that foresees
it construction, in Praia do Forte, of one mega resort with 2thousand
apartments, totalizing a investment of U$ 300 million and the Projeto
Turístico Reserva de Imbassaí (a tourist project in Imbassaí),
a hotel and houses complex of the Portuguese group Reta Atlântico,
that will be built in Mata de São João, a investment of
45 millions euros.
The government of Bahia itself has strong believes in the tourist potential
of the region, intensifying the investments in infrastructure, with the
construction of Linha Verde (Green Line, important road) and the enlargement
of Estrada do Coco (Coconut Road), among another actions. The subject
published in Forbes Magazine (FORBES MAGAZINE, 12jun, 2004), in the last
years U$ 300 million have been invested on the BA-099 (Green Line) construction,
in treatment units (water, drain, etc) in Costa do Sauípe and Praia
do forte, as well as on the amplification of the International Airport
of Salvador.
Another enterprise that has been built with the intention to value the
region is the Alphaville Litoral Norte, located in the km11 of Estrada
do Coco, before it toll. With the ending of the workmanships foreseen
for this year, the enterprise will have more than 300 thousand m2 of residential
area and more than 23 t thousand m2 of business area, according to the
information on the entrepreneur’s web-site (http://www.alphaville.....
). A project of a leisure club for the residents is include on this project
and also trade center (shops, restaurants, etc)
The great flux of people in Estrada do Coco represents a big potential to the region. And, there is no doubts, the volumes of enterprises foreseen for the next years tends to increase even more this flux, making the Costa dos Coqueiros being a region propitious for investments. Among the localities belonged to this region is the Jauá Beach, that due to it great tourist potential, became an attractive local for investments.
Localization: Vila de Abrantes, Camaçari-BA
