An overview about CPF

CPF is a Brazilian document which is used to identify tax payments which means Cadastro de Pessoa Física or Physical Person Register. It is a federal identification and also valid in the whole national territory.

CNPJ - Cadastro Nacional de Pessoa Jurídica ( National Register of Juridical Person) is a similar document to CPF , which is used as a company identificaton.

CPF was created by Secretaria da Receita Federal , in order to indentify and control the tax payments in Brazil, although nowadays the companies can identify their customers by this identificationas . Therefore CPF is a really necessary document for many situations in a citzen’s life. For instance it is used to operate in banks, get properties, act in any profitable business, buy anything through credit national system, get telephone line and many other things related to tax.

CPF is not a personal ID at all nor presents any photo. Therefore, it must be presented together with another official ID like (driiving license, passaport, etc.).

According to the law each person can get only one CPF card whose number can never be changed. Besides the citzen will have to declare his/her annual income through this number. The citzens who get less than R$ 13.968,01 yearly , will have only to declare that are exempt from income tax. Almost everyone can get a CPF number on a simple and quick way even for people who do not have permanent residence in Brazil. On the other hand the procedure to get a CNPJ is slower and more bureaucratic.
